History[]
The Five Great Civilizations.[]
On Mobius, large chunks of history are collected into eras known as "Civlizations". The First Civilization to this day is a topic of debate amongst scholars and historians and no one is quite sure of who or what The Ancients were exactly, but many agree that their presence is what started life on the planet. There is some evidence to suggest the seven powerful artifacts known as the Chaos Emeralds were used, but as to how, is unclear. The deprecated ruins of The Ancients can still be found today across much of the land, both above and below ground, with the largest concentration being the Starfall Islands located within the forbidden zone, The Anodyne Straits. Much like their presence, how or why they aren't present today isn't certain.
The Second Great Civilization, otherwise known as The Babylonians, crashed their interstellar colony ship, the Babylon Garden, onto the planet. They were called said to be tall raptors with the demeanor of "shooting stars". A fierce and proud people, and with them they brought highly advanced technology and ways of life. Some surmise that the Babylonians is what kicked off modern life in general, but their history is almost as murky, with the only notes and history they left behind were intricate stone carvings found in such places as the Gigan Rocks. Historians contest whether or not the Babylon Garden ever existed, as it has been either a fabrication of burgeoning ancient tribes, or completely lost to time. Many mobians today can trace their lineage back to the Babylonians, with the closest equivalent being that of avian mobians.
The Third Great Civilization is where Humanity started entering the world stage. Their origins are unsure and unclear, with the working theory that they are a radical offshoot of mobian that evolved in areas of the planet without Chaos Energy, but there is little evidence to support this. Instead, humans proved to outpace mobian societies in terms of engineering and technology, with the largest notable example being traces of a faction only known as The Technomancers. What is known is that many humans grew fearful of mobians and their often-fantastic abilities, such as controlling fire, amongst various elements. Humans are historically incapable of wielding abilities and powers, where they average that only 1 in every 50,000 can seemingly be able to wield such power. As a result, a war broke out between humans and mobians in the third age, but nobody is quite sure who started it, with history pointing to both sides, until humanity seemingly dwindled to almost nothing in the blink of an eye over a single night. With the war unabated, the planets inhabitants started turning inward. Since then, humanity has been slowly regaining a presence in the world.
The Fourth Great Civilization began a series of conflicts that would irrevocably alter the dynamics of the planet and its people. With the war against the humans having vanished overnight, many different societies thought a period of peace would come about, and it did, but only for a short while. A small tribe known as The Knuckles came across a brilliantly shining emerald of massive size, and took it with them, feeling that it was an important artifact but of unknown origin, they sequestered what they called the Master Emerald in a secret shine deep within the heart of their capital territory, establishing a sect of guardians to oversee its use. Many travelers and pilgrims would visit this Master Emerald for prayers and wishes, giving supervision of a Guardian, a being who is entrusted to safeguard the powerful object. Following the death of the Matriarch of the Knuckles Clan and previous Guardian, a warlord known as Pachacamac took over as Chieftan. The Knuckles Warriors were known for their martial prowess and mastery over many elements of Chaos, and soon took to establishing a war economy, where they would seize and conquer neighboring tribes and territories, establishing Thrall Clans to fight for them and create an even greater empire. One clan, the Nocturnus, who held a greater mastery over technology compared to other tribes at the time, were one of the few to fight back the Knuckles. Their conflict would be a long and bloody affair, with the Nocturnus growing more desperate as the days dragged on. Ditto for the Knuckles, as they would seek greater power in the form of the Master Emerald.
Raiding the shrine where the emerald was located, Pachacamac enraged a powerful god by inadvertently killing a garden of creatures known today as Chao in his pursuit of the Master Emerald. The capital of the Knuckles was wiped out in a great flood, and the only known records of this incident refer to it as "the God of Destruction, Chaos." Seizing this opportunity to roll over the extremely weakened Knuckles Clan, the Nocturnus blazed a path through the lands, destroying anyone that got in their way, led by a mad and power-hungry tyrant known as Py'roth Ix.
It was during this time that the Order of the Heralds, a fellowship of Chaos Emerald wielders who were seemingly chosen by the emeralds themselves, stepped in to stop the Nocturnus path of destruction. Events recorded hereafter are extremely muddled, with the only sure record being a poem written by an unknown witness to the battle, this poem now known as The Legend of the Golden Herald, tells of a terrible battle with a "demon of iron skin", with the Golden Herald perishing seemingly soon thereafter.
Weakened by their battle with the Golden Herald, the Nocturnus retreated to the closest land they could, having suffered another unknown calamity, and allied with the remaining Knuckles to lift a large chunk of earth into the sky, thus creating the "Land in the Sky," Angel Island.
The Black Campaign[]
With the world still reeling from the Feudal Era of Mobius, many had grown tired of the constant fighting, and sought peace once again. Humans and Mobians were on uneasy ground, negotiating a pact to form a peace treaty. It was soon interrupted by an untimely intervention from a hostile alien race descending on the planet not unlike the Babylonians several hundred millenia ago. This race was known as the Black Arms, a militant force intent on taking the planet as their own. Not much is known about them today, but what we do know is that they were comprised of hulking, spike-laden creatures that tore through many of the planet's remaining warriors, already exhausted by the generations of fighting they had to endure.
Once more, the Order of the Heralds, this time seemingly lacking a leader, took the Black Arms head on. Fighting hard and wielding power never before seen, they fought the aliens for fifty days and forty-nine nights, with the Heralds perishing one by one, having gone one-on-thousands a piece. The last remaining herald, using the Chaos Emeralds, performed a technique known only as "Chaos Control" and sent the Black Comet back into space, This display of guardianship from a mobian, protecting all of mobius, including the humans, proved to humanity that cooperation was the ultimate goal of their species. This event greatly weakened the herald, now known as The Last Herald, but he would cling to life and advise the planet many years after.
Thus, the pact was formed into The Council of Mobius, a union of nations and leaders paving way for prosperity.
